The Los Angeles based new music collective What’s Next? was created in the spring of 2008 with the single mission of bringing together talented young musicians to perform exciting new music. Formed by two friends and fellow students at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music, John Stulz and Vimbayi Kaziboni, for its inaugural concert, What’s Next? presented a pizza and minimalism concert in the courtyard of one of USC’s student housing complexes.
In 2009, joining forces with percussionist and composer Ben Phelps, What’s Next? launched The Los Angeles Composers Project, an endeavor to bring talented young musicians from across the country together in a festival setting with Los Angeles based composers. The three-concert whirl-wind tour of contemporary music in Los Angeles proved so successful, they agreed to do it again. The 2010 Composers Project, which willl feature an entirely new slate of composers, will be the collective’s most ambitious project to date and will set the groundwork for a sustained effort to connect young musicians with the wealth of compositional talent and ideas circulating in Los Angeles today.
